Frasier, Hip-Hop Samples, Insect Bureaucracy, Rock Hounds, Anti-Trust, Banana Pudding, Weird French Laughter, Datamoshing, and Ninja Turtles
This feels like something that should have been obvious. But, wow, curating and organizing a group of artists to remake an episode of Frasier is taking up a LOT of my time. If you haven’t been following that project, I wrote a whole post about it. Meanwhile, here’s the latest trailer:
We’re still looking for filmmakers, animators, illustrators, and anyone else who would want to help remake an episode of Frasier. Oh! Also, a screening venue for a premiere, a sound designer, a sound mixer, and anyone who knows anything about PR. Woof! If you know anyone lmk!
Anyhoots and hollers, here’s a newsletter for ya. Wishing you good mental health,
Jacob
HERE’S AN IDEA: SAMPLER PLATTER
Music vlogger Jarred Jermaine recently posted a video showing where some of the most iconic samples in hip-hop songs came from:
(Side note: If you’re not familiar with Labi Siffre – please enjoy one of the best)
This got me thinking: I want to listen to that podcast! What podcast? The one that doesn’t yet exist (to my knowledge) where Jarred or another music fan and/or producer breaks down two songs per episode: the more famous recent song we’re familiar with, and the original tune they pulled the sample from.
The podcast would also explore where each artist was at career-wise, creativity-wise, life-wise, and other-wise during the time they made the song, as well as any similarities, etc. Of course, it would also have to cover whether or not the sample was done legally or otherwise with the original artist’s blessing and how they reacted when the new song came out.
Anyway, I’d listen the shit out of this! Whadya think?
CONSUMPTION JUNCTION
Three things I’ve seen, heard, or otherwise experienced recently that have been on my mind.
These tiny insect signs from artist Evan Lorenzen make me laugh and I would deeply enjoy encountering them in the wild — especially if I didn’t know who made them. They are available for purchase or to print your own on his website.
Dan Pfeiffer’s substack is great (IMO he’s always the most on point of the Crooked Bros) and I thought this recent post about DeSantis’ campaign was fascinating. Essentially it is all about how they are planning to come in second while hammering other candidates and elevating Trump. It may read like this is on purpose, but it sounds like it’s really more just because he’s an idiot and a coward.
You know your boy loves a subculture. Lately, I’ve been into rock enthusiasts and stumbled across videos of rock hounds (as they adorably refer to themselves) finding Yooperlite (which was discovered recently and named after the U.P.). Dang, these rocks look cool!
DO SOMETHING
As the WGA strike passes 100 days and SAG-AFTRA nears its second month on the picket line, here’s something you can do if you work in any sector of the entertainment industry.
The Federal Trade Commission is opening a long overdue Antitrust investigation into how entertainment company mergers are negatively affecting the market and people’s livelihoods. Monday, August 28th (aka tomorrow) is the last day to comment, so get in there! Comment here on the FTC Website
HOT TIP!
When my wife and I first started dating she lived near the Magnolia Bakery on 3rd Street and we spent the first year of our relationship pretty much only sharing physical affection (sorry, TMI), binge-watching TV, and eating Magnolia’s banana pudding. More than a decade and two kids later, things are very different — but guess what:
The New York Times has added Magnolia’s famous banana pudding to their recipe site so you can make your own! It won’t make you feel 26 again, but damn it’s tasty.
Of course, you have to pay for an NYT subscription and they block 12-foot ladder. If you don’t already know, you can get free access to NYT online with your LAPL library card. Sadly, I don’t think it includes recipes… but the recipe is from their book and it’s also available on The Girl Who Ate Everything’s blog for free.
ARE WE HAVING FUN YET?
The French TV show C’est mon choix brought on people with unusual laughs to sit together and at one point they all start laughing and it’s just too much.

CREATIVE RESOURCES
I love shot libraries. They’re super helpful for putting together pitch decks and director treatments, but also for learning more about your craft and utilizing shared terminology. That last part is where Eye Candy comes in. Their shot archive is organized strictly by type of shot.
A few favorites that I had never had a term for? Datamosh. Slitscan. Object Portal.
LITERALLY JUST A BRAG
I’m super excited about the new TMNT movie that’s out right now. And, I’m fully not above using that excitement to brag about the time I got to voice Mikey in this short for Nickelodeon along with my pals Dave Theune, Lauren Lapkus, and more!
Alrighty, that’s it for this issue. Feel free to leave a comment or share the newsletter using the links below.
Party on,
