Ahoy there! My wife is getting induced in about 11 hours and am I relaxed? Oh baby, you know I am not. Anywho, here's some newsletter tidbits while I quietly excuse myself to experience the existential panic and wonder of becoming a parent. Enjoy!
Birth Announcements With Sex Instead of Gender We decided not to know the gender of our baby and in prepping for their arrival I've realized how culturally ingrained my own gender biases are.
While you arguably don't know what 'gender' your child has at birth, you still know what kind of genitals it has. So, instead of gender, maybe we just do sex organ announcements?
I'm half joking, but also, wow gender biases are steeped into our culture so so deep. A stranger asked us what color we were painting our nursery if we didn't know the baby's gender. Then, they asked if we'd repaint it blue or pink after we knew. Anyway, I'm keeping the pink, blue, and stork imagery. Whadya think?
Some of the most interesting things I read, watched, or listened to in recent weeks:
The Misogyny of Climate Change Deniers
The New Republic links chauvinism and climate change denial with data. Sadly, I'm certain nobody who needs to read this article would ever believe it in the first place.
Surreal Portraits Of A Fading American Dream
These photos on BuzzFeed News are beautiful and said portraits of an Americana that doesn't really exist anymore.
Here's a video of a Frenchie climbing up an icy hill and then sliding down it on it's back over and over again. I could watch this all day.
Send letters to prospective voters! We had a great time at our letter writing event last week, but you don't need an invitation to write letters to prospective voters.
Vote Forward makes it easy for anyone to write (and even send voter registration info) to voters all over the country. Sign up here.
Do you love it when things are the wrong size? Go fuzzy for forced perspective? Feel kawaii for tiny crafts? Then you'll love this week's Instaporn. Category is: MINATURES
⬆️ @Minitoru87 – This one is pretty much my favorite. There's such whimsy and I love how everything we know is the way it is because of tiny little workers.
⬆️ @that.but.smaller – Some of these look like you took a Honey I Shrunk The Kids gun to regular buildings and objects. Also, I love the Los Angeles specifics.
⬆️ @miniworldstudios – Alrighty, these are film-level miniature sets and hooboy I wanna use one for a shoot. HOW COOL ARE THEY?!
The Glacier Express is supposedly one of the most beautiful rail travel experiences in Europe. It's a luxury train tour of the Swiss Alps and I would love to experience it.
I filed my paperwork on Friday to join the Director's Guild of America and I couldn't be more excited to join not only a union, but a group of some of the most talented people in the world.
Thanks for reading! I'd love to get your feedback. Favorite segment? What's working? What's not working? What do you want to see more of?
