Issue 204: Boxes, Atlantic City, Gaslighting, and Cereal
Happy Hump Day! Most of my life the last few weeks has been fixing up our new house before we move in and YIKES that is a time and money consuming thing. I'm writing this from the porch while I wait for the County Inspector to sign off on our electrical work.
Adulting seems more glamorous in your twenties. Anywho... enjoy this newsletter with some fun and interesting stuff!
Amazon Box Drop Off. It could just be that I have moving on the brain, or that I took out the trash in our apartment yesterday only to find a bin full of unbroken down boxes hogging the space (monsters!). But... we gotta get better at re-using boxes!
It's estimated that Amazon ships 1.6 MILLION packages a day. Some probably get recycled, but if people on the whole are as lazy and ill informed as those at my apartment complex, I wouldn't count on it.
Amazon does have a "Give Back Box" program that helps you use your old Amazon boxes to send donations to places like Goodwill. That's great, but it shouldn't be your only option. Amazon already has 2,800 pick up lockers in major areas in the U.S. I think they should add a box drop off area to those pick up lockers to aid in recycling and reusing boxes.
You can bring back your old boxes – or any boxes – to that location and the Amazon delivery trucks that drop stuff off can take the boxes back to wherever they need to go next. It seems so simple. Whadya think?
This fascinating (and grim) article from Longreads discusses how Atlantic City could become "a global hub for climate science, casinos gradually replaced with laboratories."
"There's no doubt that Atlantic City is going under. The only question left is: Can an entire city donate its body to science?"
Beautiful, museum worth illustrations by Matt Chinworth.
Some of the most interesting things I read, watched, or listened to in recent weeks:
"Electability" is Just Another Word For Gaslighting
SVP of the Democracy Alliance, Julie Kohler, on Biden joining the 2020 Democratic race. Woof.
NYT: We Could All Use a Little Snail Mail Right Now
Science supports what your local stationary store already knows: sending and receiving paper goods actually makes us feel better.
538: How Cable News + Polls Reacted to 2020 Campaign Announcements
The amount of cable news coverage strongly influences polling. Exceptions are Beto (polled lower than his coverage) and Kamala (higher).
Three states have recently advanced bills banning abortion before most people even know they're pregnant. Gov. Kemp just signed one into law in Georgia as the religious right tries to get a lawsuit started that will eventually go to the Supreme Court and overturn Roe V. Wade.
If you're not already, this is a really good reason to donate to the ACLU.
Magic Spoon cereal boasts 12g protein, 3g net carbs, and 110 calories per serving... supposedly it also tastes like amazing kids cereal.
YOU HAVE MY ATTENTION, MAGIC SPOON!
At a pricey $180, this Studio Roller from George and Willy is still one of the cheapest options I've seen. There are some DIY options, but I wanna just buy this one...
I should probably find a local church and go to confession for how much I've been coveting this mid-century walnut coffee table from Sunbeam Vintage. Imagine all my vintage Sunset magazines and design books on that display shelf. *SWOON*
About a month ago I started an Instagram called Found Foundry where I highlight interesting typography I see in alphabetical order. Check it out if that's your kinda thing!
