Issue 011: Broadway Streams, Hulk Hogan, Minesweeper & Secret Rooms
Dang, Y'all! It's AUGUST already. I'm camping in Joshua Tree next weekend to see the Perseid Meteor shower and I am pretty excited about it. Got any summer plans coming up? I'd love to hear about them!
Why isn't there a Broadway streaming service with recorded performances of plays and musicals?
They have to film them already, right? No way I'd sink millions of $$$ into producing a Broadway show and not have at least one decent recording of it. There's a service through the New York Public Library where you can view some of these and PBS broadcasts a few on Great Performances. There's also a thriving bootleg community on YouTube where I've watched several nauseatingly handheld recordings.
If producers are holding out until they can exhaust ticket sales, or because CATS, Wicked, and others are being adapted into films... I get that. BUT, theater is a culturally significant art that (even though best experienced live) deserves to be available to the public at little or no charge. At the very least, any library or theater school should have online access to the NYPL archives.
I mean... I'd pay $4.99 a month to add this to my streaming package. Whadya think?
Not only is a FEATURE FILM being made about the Gawker vs Hulk Hogan drama... there are THREE COMPETING MOVIES.
DEVO used one of Reagan gunman John Hinckley Jr.'s poems as lyrics for a song... which means Warner Brothers regularly pays the attempted assassin 'lyricist royalties.'
There's actually a way to win at Minesweeper (maybe obvious, but I never knew). Naturally, this has become one of my go-to time wasters.
Vimeo user Jacob T. Swinney compiled the opening and closing shots of 55 films side-by-side.
Genius in its simplicity. A great idea, executed flawlessly.
From now til the 2018 U.S. midterms I'm covering races I think you should pay attention to. Here's CA-48 in SoCal, a long-held Republican seat in a district Hilary Clinton won.
Dana Rohrabacher is the GOP incumbent. Some quick facts about him:
71-year-old former speechwriter for President Reagan who's been in congress for THREE DECADES
Voted to repeal Obamacare
"Aggressive skeptic" of global warming
Doesn't think realtors should have to sell homes to LGBTQ buyers
Endorsed arming toddlers on Sacha Baron Cohen's Who Is America?
Called the cops on a citizen who asked questions about his deeply suspicious ties to Russia
Even Whoopi Goldberg and Megan McCain agree he's 'one of the worst in Congress'
Harley Rouda is the progressive Democrat challenging Rohrabacher. Quick facts from his website:
55, has four kids, a dog, and lives with his wife in Laguna Beach
Supported by Senators Feinstein and Harris
Wants to end Citizens United and get big $$ out of politics
Supports immigration, LGBTQ rights, Obamacare and women's reproductive rights
Looks like Jeff Daniels and Will Arnet had a baby*
What's at stake?
Progressives' best chance to regain power in Washington is taking back the House of Representatives.
Of the 435 House seats, 78 are competitive Swing Districts. Dems only need to flip 23 of them.
Donate or volunteer for Harley via Swing Left, Indivisible or his website.

This company builds elaborate secret doors for the kid in all of us / when we inevitably have to hide ourselves or others from Trump's secret police/ICE.
Parks Project's summer collection is out and I WANT EVERYTHING IN IT. (Also, all procedes go to help specific projects at state and national parks.)
